If I want to paste a whole description of a side trip, can I do it from a work document that already exists to this area in the forum? Or do I have to retype the whole dang thing??

If you have a word document you should be able to just copy the text and then when you are creating the post in the forum just paste the text. If you have special formatting in the word document it will probably be lost but the paragraphs and text should make it over just fine.
